Ananda Tarot

VIII - Collection

In the number eight, the four as a material ordinal number reaches through its doubling the next highest octave. After a sequence of notes, which consists of seven whole notes, a new octave begins with the eighth. This points to refinement as well as density. In the I Ching, one of the oldest oracles of mankind, we find in the number eight wind, thunder, water, and mountain as representations of the four elements.

The stability of the square becomes more potent in its double. From the earliest times of architecture, the octagon has had special importance as the transition from square to circle for domed construction. Beyond its character as a mathematical gteat, the eight was viewed as an especially lucky number in ancient times. The eight spokes of the wheel of fortune suggest cosmic balance. As a symbol for the grace of eternal life, Christian baptismal fonts were formed octagonally. In its supportive character, eight represents stability, permanence and the preservation of existing values - be they of material or idealistic nature.
